I am writing this paper in order to display my ideas about the works of literacy in print. I have come across many different aspects in my learning that have influenced my thoughts and visions. I will be using findings as my belief for putting literacy into practice at the Elementary level. I will include in my writing different teaching techniques‚ a list of the Indiana Literacy Standards‚ ways to assess student learning‚ and addressing both early language learning and development and upper elementary instruction.

Children at the early stage in learning need many outside influences to guide them in the right direction. I have seen students positively and negatively affected from interaction and introduction to learning at home. I feel very strongly about encouraging parents to start their children early on reading. Reading is a fundamental skill that all people should possess. Even if the parent just take the time to talk to their child daily, so they become immersed in language. Then once the child develops speech they can begin learning the alphabet. I feel that this is a great home basis for parents to give to their children prior to entering a classroom setting. I also know that television has had a large impact on child development. The introduction of children’s programs such as Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood were great motivators and teaching tools in the home.

Once the child has those skills understood it is time for the teacher to step in and play their role. First, the teacher should establish an idea as to what prior knowledge all he children in the classroom have been given. Once there is a place to start letter/sound association should begin. Knowing what letters create what sounds is a wonderful thing to know so a child is capable of sounding a word out on his/her own. The more we encourage a child to learn on their own the more apt they are to retain that knowledge. I have found that the best way for children and really anyone to learn a topic well is to almost require them to seek out the answer because they want to know. It is easier to do this with younger children because they want to feel included and they need these basics skills to do so. The best learning comes from interest. I have also noticed that many children will be very competitive. They feel superior or inferior to other children that they interact with on a daily basis.

I believe that the primary elementary level teachers should focus on spelling as a way to continue working on sounds corresponding with letters. The English language is one of the most complex and difficult to understand. The more children are immersed in words they will come across in every day speech the better understanding they will have of proper pronunciation and spelling. I have noticed that many teachers have weekly spelling lists for students to work on at home and in class. Then at the end of the week they will be quizzed over them. I have also seen teachers that give a pre-test on Monday of a week and those words that the students already know they won’t have to regurgitate on the final quiz/test at the end of the week. I think that I would lean more toward a pre-test and post-test because then the students can feel good about themselves for knowing their information. This is a type of reward system for students.
There are also many other challenges that face today’s educator. Students in a regular classroom today have gradually become more and more socially, culturally, physically and cognitively diverse. Inclusion has played a big role in learning differences that are found in any given classroom. Physical handicaps and students from other culture regions are going to present the biggest challenge to teachers attempting to teach literacy ideas to children. Since most children at an early age grasp concepts from example, it may be difficult for some to understand ideas if they don’t understand the spoken English language. Students with a different language background will hopefully have time during their daily instruction with an ESL instructor. This will lessen the adaptations that a regular classroom teacher. A child with a physical handicap such as being hearing impaired will need other forms of assistance.

I hope that for the future more finances can be turned to education so all children at all schools will have the same opportunities as others, but that isn’t always going to be the case. Through my studies I have seen all sorts of problems that low-income schools face that affect children development. The resources such as computers, books, and other teaching tools are lacking in schools in poor districts. This can have a negative effect of the students in that area become instruction that may be necessary for them to progress may not be available.

I think that general conditions and principles of learning that need to be addressed regardless of a child’s status socially, physically, or culturally are adaptation, inclusion and involvement. A teacher needs to be flexible and be able to change things at the spur of the moment. Many things can change by day and as a professional a teacher needs to be prepared to adapt their lesson to accommodate these changes. The idea of adaptation goes hand in hand with inclusion. A teacher needs to be able to alter these instructions to accommodate all learning types in a classroom and make sure that everyone has an equal chance to participate. Here is where the involvement idea comes into play. A student needs to be actively involved and engaged in learning all literacy concepts. It is the teacher’s job to make sure the learning environment and topics can include everyone as a whole.

There are basically 7 different Indiana State Language Arts Standards that are addressed in the primary grade levels of K-2. They are as follows:
Standard 1:
READING: Word Recognition, Fluency, and Vocabulary Development
Standard 2:
READING: Reading Comprehension
Standard 3:
READING: Literary Response and Analysis
Standard 4:
WRITING: Writing Process
Standard 5:
WRITING: Writing Applications (Different Types of Writing and Their Characteristics)
Standard 6:
WRITING: Written English Language Conventions
Standard 7:
LISTENING AND SPEAKING: Listening and Speaking Skills, Strategies, and Applications

I have chosen to talk about the Kindergarten level of instruction about a couple of certain standards ad the way I would go about teaching these ideas to a classroom. I would like to address Standard K.1.5 as my substandard from the reading Standard of Word Recognition, Fluency, and Vocabulary Development. Standard K.1.5 states: Distinguish letter from words. I would obviously first take time to address the alphabet with the classroom. For students to understand what a letter is they need to know what all the letters are. Aside from having all the letters in upper and lower case across the wall in the room I would daily have the students recite the alphabet for the first couple of days or weeks. This way they become familiar with all 26 characters and have music practice as well. From there I would address what words are. “A word is made by putting letters together.” I would then construct a teacher reading with a pre-selected book. I can have questions prepared regarding words a letters.

I have chosen Standard K.5.1 as my Writing substandard to address. K.5.1 states: Draw pictures and write words for a specific reason. I would work with the children in a couple of different fashions here to make sure they get set in stone the idea of writing words in relation to the pictures they drew. First I would find a great picture book that did a great job depicting words related to pictures for the students. I would read through and then ask the students if different sentences or words made sense in the story if I changed them around. Then I would have them draw a picture of something out of the story and write about it. They can write whatever they feel necessary. Once they have this task completed, either later that day or sometime later in the week or year, I would have the students draw a picture of whatever they wanted and then tell me a story about it. They would use to description words to tell me what is going on in the picture hey drew.

There are tons of different ways to assess a child’s knowledge for a given activity or assignment. You can use a rubric, formal assessment such as a test of quiz, or observation of student performance. With the primary students observation is going to be extremely common because it is hard to for children at that young an age to grasp incorrect and correct work. I would have spelling tests/quizzes for the children in 1st or 2nd. You can establish a rubric that break down what you feel was necessary in a paper the students were to write. Then as you go back through and read the writing you can check off whether or not all things were included. The rubric should of course be created before giving the assignment so you can make sure that proper instructions are given to the students. Observation work can be tested in many different ways. As a teacher you need to decide what a student should be getting out of an activity. The teacher can then go around the room during the activity and check that the students are following directions and keeping on task. The type of assessment that a teacher uses really depends upon what they want the child to get out of the lesson or activity.

An example of an emergent literacy student that has gone through all the different writing, storytelling, etc. I performed a case study on a Kindergarten named Elizabeth. She was a very bright girl, but appeared fairly shy. Part of the assignment that she was asked to complete was a CAP assessment task. I presented Elizabeth with a book and then asked her different questions related to the book itself such as “where is the cover/front of the book,” “Can you show me what a word looks like?” I had a rubric next to me that I would check off yes and no depending on the students’ reaction to my question. Once all the questions were asked I added up the score to come by her CAP assessment score. This is good for teachers because it shows them what a child does and does not know about reading and books in general.

For a more involved quiz type form of assessment I am going to refer to a 1st grade class at Wea Ridge Elementary. I got the chance to so many different hands on and small group with these children. I found that their weekly spelling words were a constant them throughout the day. Every activity they did had a relationship with their spelling words. On Fridays the students would take a quiz that word test their ability to spell the words given to them for the week. This is great for a teacher because he/she can create or choose words that children at that age level would use in their everyday speech and interaction. This way the teacher knows if the child really understands the words that they are using and how they fit into context with different things.

The idea of using observation can work to a teacher’s benefit in a small class setting. The teacher can roam the room looking for certain things that he/she wants the students to be doing. The teacher can chose to count it as a grade or just looking at it to make sure the class in on task and doing what they should be doing. I have been witness to many different observation techniques. The most common is usually for teachers to walk around during small group projects or activities and the teacher makes sure that everyone in the group is being an active participant. It is important for all group members to share their ideas and give their piece of the puzzle to the “big picture.” A teacher can also use observation by watching students write answers up on the board. Rather than having students turn in al work they do, using the materials in a classroom can promote learning in all sorts of ways. The more variety of techniques both for assessment and for teaching gives students a better visualization that the world is filled with many different things.
The literacy framework that I would chose when referring to the primary grades is instruction. In most cases students need to be interested in what the subject matter is. Even if the teacher finds the material dull and boring they should present to the classroom an overall appearance that they like what is going to be discussed for the day. I have seen many teachers teach materials to their students and not shown an interest in what they were talking about. The students see this negative aura coming from the teacher and they no longer have the motivation to learn. I feel that to approach teaching an educator should have a positive up beat and up lifting attitude for all subject matter.

A teacher should also have a warming learning environment. A child is more apt to learn in a classroom that they feel safe and comfortable in. These two things will give a teacher a head start into their instruction methods before they even begin teaching content. The instruction itself needs to take on many forms. A teacher needs to be flexible and be able to make adaptations during the instruction. The teacher should also be prepared to have altered lessons for students who are incapable of performing on the same level with all other students. I have too often seen teachers show complete disregard to a student struggling to get their work done because they were attempting to do the same work off the same instruction and didn’t understand what the instructions were. A teacher needs to also be very articulate. Spelling tests can be a mess if students don’t understand what the teacher is saying to the class. I have not been witness to this, but have heard that problem do arise.

In my kindergarten classroom I would go about a lesson of instruction basically two different ways. I would first try to think out what standards need to be accomplished and then try and figure out how I want to attack them. Once I have the basis for what content needs to be taught and can come up with ways to teach it. For instance, one of the kindergarten standards refers to oral communication for students. Show and tell has been around since the dawn of time nearly as, what I think at least, the best way to get students too talk to a classroom. I would try to have one to two students go per day. First I would ask the students who turn it is to bring in an object for show and tell if he/she know what they’re bringing. I the students told me that they were going to bring in pictures I would create and activity for the class to do that relates back to the idea of pictures. I would have each student construct their own picture of anything they see fit. After they have finished creating their picture we can talk as a whole what kinds of things people drew and make a tally of all the different objects created (products, food, people, etc.). Now a teacher can play off what a student presented the class with at the beginning.

My selected literacy framework of instruction fits in with all aspects of the Indiana State Language Arts Standards because proper instruction is the only way any of this content material is going to get from the list of standards to a student’s understanding. Teachers need to know how to instruct different lessons, so that the classroom can grasp the concept and be able to apply this knowledge to every day life.

I plan to use a variety of teaching methods in order to teach the concepts of words including phonemic awareness, reading skills, writing development and conventional spelling. A teacher needs to set a sort of schedule at beginning of the academic year with their students. Once the children have had a chance to settle into a routine they can function at a higher level because they know what to expect. I would use all sorts of word techniques such as word walls, clapping words, sitting and standing words, etc. There is a huge list of all sorts of ways to teach words and phonemes to children.

During reading a child needs many different examples in order to fully comprehend all the ideas presented to them. A child needs to have examples given to them so that they are capable of regurgitating information with a basis of understanding. A teacher needs to read to the classroom everyday so that the students can have a verbal example of the spoken English sounds like. A child is one of the greatest mimickers next to monkeys. Therefore, if a teacher can give proper examples to the class they will be a step ahead of the rest.
When students are learning writing skills it is also a good idea to show students different types of writing and literature. There are so many writing styles that we need to get children to understand that there is more to writing than just story telling. There is poetry, fiction, non-fiction, fairy tales, biographies, and I could keep going on forever. We need to make sure thought that children understand that storytelling isn’t the only form of writing. At the kindergarten level, storytelling is going to be the writing application that they will become most familiar with. As teachers would like to always encourage student to use free and expressive writing, but we need to have them understand that there is so much more than just plain storytelling.

You can never stress the importance of spelling at the elementary level enough. Once a child has learned how to spell and use phonics to their benefit they can do so much more than regurgitate information. Creativity needs to be presented by each and every student by some point in primary development. The earlier we begin teaching kids to form their own opinions and understanding of worldly topics the better off we will all be. This all goes right back to knowing how to spell. In today’s society you are looked down upon if you are incapable to correct spelling. Even though computers are now making it easier and easier for students to spell check and grammar check things, students need that base of solid spelling in order to perform as an active member in their community throughout life.

I have presented many thoughts and ideas that have come to be my understanding of teaching over time. I feel that motivating students into learning is the key to helping them gain more solid knowledge. The more children want to know the better off the information they get from that will stick with them. I also think that inclusion, involvement and an overall positive appearance will help motivate a child into wanting to seek knowledge. The best knowledge is wanted knowledge or “seeked” knowledge. The more a child wants to learn that information the more likely that gained knowledge will stick with them for the rest of their lives.
I also feel very strongly about a teacher having to b flexible and able to go with the flow. Classrooms can and will never be the same each day a teacher walks in. Everyone in the classroom has lives that are affected by things other than just school. A teacher needs to be aware of each one of his/her student’s attitudes daily. I know that once the teacher is able to reach a student who approached the understanding of material a completely different way than they did the day before needs the extra push of encouragement to succeed.

ON eight o’clock Thursday morning Arthur dent woke up and there was a bulldozer was ready to knock over his house. Mr.L.Prosser was trying to build a bypass were Arthur’s house was. Arthur lay in front of the bulldozer so it could not run over his house. Arthur has a friend named Ford Prefect, Ford needed to talk to Arthur. When ford arrived Arthur told Ford what was going on and why he couldn’t leave. Ford used mind games to trick Mr.prosser into lying in front of the bulldozers. The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy explains how to make the best drink in the galaxy the pan galactic gargle blaster. Ford also begins to explain to Arthur that he is not from earth. Ford had a device called a sub-etha sens-o-matic which blinked quietly away to itself in his satchel. While still in the bar ford was telling Arthur about how earth was going to be destroyed in a few moments.

They heard a crashing noise and Arthur ran outside and saw the bulldozer’s running over his house. This had been the moment ford was waiting for fifteen years now. Suddenly there was nothing but silence. All of the speakers on earth came on and formed a huge p.a.system and a voice told earth that earth was being destroyed to form a galactic expressway. The voice then instructed the huge yellow blocks to energize the demolition beams. Light then poured out of the hatchways there was silence then noise then silence. The Vogon constructor fleet flew away into the starry void .Zaphod Beeblebrox was the president of the imperial galactic government. Beeblebrox was on his way to give a speech at the “heart of gold” island also called France. This was proof to many that the whole known creation had finally gone bananas. Beeblebrox pulled up in his boat in the inner coastline and stepped into a floating bubble which transported him to where he was going to give his speech. He opened his speech by saying “hi” he looked around and then said “hi” again. One of the officials realized that Beeblebrox was not in the mood to give a speech so he reached in his coat and pressed a button. In the middle of the crowd a giant white globe began to come from the sky and a spaceship was inside the globe.

In the middle of the starship lay a gold box which was the most brain wrenching device in the galaxy known as the heart of gold. Beeblebrox said that is so truly amazing I’d like to steal it. Beeblebrox could not bear it anymore so he reached into his coat and pulled out a Paralyso-matic bomb. In chapter 5 Arthur wakes to find himself on a Vogon ship accompanied by Ford. Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz was always looking for something to be mad about it was the only thing that made him happy. The Dentrassis were hired by the Vogons to act as servants to the Vogons. Ford gave Arthur some peanuts because after coming through the matter transference it would drain the body of protein. Ford then showed Arthur the “Hitchhikers guide to the universe and how it worked. Ford gave Arthur a small yellow fish that would translate any language. Arthur refused at first, and then ford quickly put it in his ear before he could do anything. Arthur began to understand the intercom.

Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz said over the intercom that he knew there were hitchhikers on board his ship. There were patrol’s marching around looking for hitchhiker’s. Arthur began to think about earth and how everything was gone. Arthur wanted to look up in “the hitchhikers guide to the universe” what was listed for the term earth and there was only one word “hopeless”. As Arthur was looking at the guide Ford heard something and a Vogon patrol knocked on the door and grabbed Arthur and Ford. Ford and Arthur were strapped in chairs and were being forced to listen to Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz say a few words of his poetry. Arthur seemed to not even realize how bad the poetry actually was. So Arthur and Ford scrambled for words trying to save their lives but it did not work. Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz ordered a guard to take them to an air lock and throw them out into space. The guard threw them into the small chamber and within a matter of moments they were being sucked into outer space.

Chapter 8 briefly describes how the hitchhikers guide says that the universe is very very big. It also states the chances of being picked up by a ship which just happens to Ford and Arthur 29 seconds later. Ford and Arthur have been picked up by the Starship heart of gold. Inside everything was twisting and turning and there were a lot of unusual things happening. The ship is powered by the infinite probability drive which was a myth to most. Chapter 10 briefly describes how the ship was created. It was by a student who had a clever idea of making the ship. The student tested his theory and he turned out to be right. In chapter 11 Trillion and Zaphod find that Arthur and Ford are also on the ship. They send Marvin a robot to find Arthur and Ford and escort them to Trillion and Ford. Marvin is a personality robot, his personality is depressed. In chapter 12 Zaphod hears on the radio of him stealing the starship heart of gold. Trillion and Zaphod sit down and work out the probability of them going through space and picking up hitchhikers.

As they figure out the probability Arthur and Ford are on their way up to Trillion and Zaphod. Arthur and Ford finally arrived at the bridge. “Beeblebrox” said Ford. Arthur replied by saying you know him. Yes, said Ford we are semi-cousins. Arthur then said we have met on earth at a party you called yourself Phil but then you only had two arms and one head. Zaphod then asked Ford why he was on earth and Ford said he got stuck there. Trillion then appeared at the end of the bridge and said hello and Arthur also said hello he also had known Trillion. Trillion, Zaphod, and Ford could not sleep. So all three went on to the bridge and looked at the map and the tiny bleeps on it. Then the screen went black they had entered the Horse head Nebula. Zaphod replied by yelling I found it I finally found it. Chapter 15 is an excerpt from the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. It tells how worlds were formed and worlds were destroyed. It tells of how the first planet was made. Today that planet is just a myth it is just a myth.

In chapter 16 the heart of gold found the planet Magrathea. The first clue that it might be Magrathea was its two suns, Soulianis and Rahm. As the ship was approaching the planet a voice began to talk to the ship. It said the planet was closed and hoped they would come back some other time but the ship proceeded. So the planet fired two nukes at the ship. Taking manual control of the ship very briefly they avoided the nukes. The only damage was to someone’s shoulder. The only reason the ship avoided the nuke’s was that Arthur had hit the improbability drive without setting it up. This caused the ship to avoid the nuclear warheads. In chapter 19 they were getting ready to leave through a hatchway when the computer was talking to them when Zaphod said “I think we will be better off with a slide rule” when the computer said right. The computer demanded that whoever said that had better confess or he was not letting them off. Zaphod threatened the computer to let hem go which he did after a few seconds. They got off the ship and began to walk across the planet.

A sperm whale had knocked an opening to a secret passageway. The passageway went underground were the Magrathean’s spent most of their time. While in the passageway Zaphod told Ford and Trillion that someone had engraved their initials in both of his brains. Arthur asked what they were and Zaphod said Z.B. the room then filled with gas and the three soon passed out. In chapter 21 “the hitchhikers guide to the universe tells a story about a student. The student looked for and found a planet that was entirely inhabited by ballpoint pens. It was night now and almost pitch-black out. It was so dark that Arthur did not even see the man that he walked into. In chapter 22 the old man and Arthur began to talk. The old man told Arthur about how the Magratheans were beginning to awake. The Magratheans had gone into a slumber to pass through the recession five million years earlier.

The man told Arthur that his name was Slartibartfast. Slartibartfast took Arthur into his ship and was going to take him into the planet core. Chapter 23 describes how dolphins were smarter than man and attempted several times to warn man of what was going to happen. After repeated failures the dolphins gave up and left earth soon before the Vogons arrived. In chapter 24 Slartibartfast took Arthur deep into the core of Magrathea. Slartibartfast would take Arthur to the area where planets were made. Slartibartfast told Arthur that mice had requested that the planet Earth be built and everything mice did was just an act put on. Mice had now requested that a new Earth be built. In chapter 25 it tells of how a few million years ago a race of hyper intelligent beings created a supercomputer to work out what the meaning of life was. After the computer was created and turned on two of the computer’s programmers asked the computer what was the meaning of life.

The computer replied by telling them that it would take the computer several million years to work out an answer. The programmers were upset because they thought they had built the smartest computer in the universe and it would give them an answer in seconds or moments. In chapter 26 Slartibartfast is going to tell Arthur about the second half of the story. Slartibartfast is going to take him to the new earth which is under construction or to hear it on sens-o-tape records. In chapter 27 Slartibartfast took Arthur to the study. Slartibartfast gave Arthur some wire’s to hold and as Arthur touched them he began to fly over a city. Then he was transported into a room with the supercomputer deep thought. Deep thought was about to tell the answer to the question they had asked millions of years earlier. Deep thought told them the answer was “forty two”. The two men in the room gasped. One of the men said “what does that mean”. Deep Thought told them they were asking the wrong question. Deep thought told the men that the only one who knows the question is the computer that will come after me. The supercomputer said he would design the next computer and name it “Earth”. Soon the recording had ended. Slartibartfast was standing in front of Arthur. Ford and Trillion woke Zaphod up. He had sleep longer since he had two lungs. They had been put into a holding cell where the scenery continually changed. As Arthur came out of the recording he and Slartibartfast talked about how Slartibartfast got his award. Slartibartfast told Arthur that the mice were waiting for him and that his arrival on the planet had been the third most improbable event in the history of the universe. Arthur and Slartibartfast soon left the study and got in a transport that took them to another room. They got in the room and a light appeared above a door. They walked in the room and saw Zaphod, Ford, and Trillion stuffing their faces with food. Arthur then noticed two mice sitting on the table. The two mice began to explain how the answer to the universe was in his brain and they were willing to buy it for a lot of money and give Arthur another brain. Arthur shrieked and tried to escape but as the door opened a group of men stood in front of the door preventing them from escaping. Soon a computer came online and said intruders armed and dangerous. The two mice saw Zaphod, ford, Trillion, and Arthur running up a passage way. Soon they were being shot at by cops. They all jumped into an opening between two computers and ducked to hide from the police fire. They all soon heard a thud and the fire had stopped. Ford looked out and saw two cops lying on the ground. He walked up to one of the cops and he was dead. Ford called the others and they followed. The group ran outside and got in an air car and there was a note on a computer panel with an arrow pointing a button that said “this is probably the best one to push”. The air car took them back to the heart of gold where there was another ship next to it. Everyone got on the ship except Ford who walked towards the other ship which turned out to be the cop’s ship. As Ford approached the ship he found Marvin lying face down in the ground. Marvin said he began to talk to the ship so it killed itself. Soon the heart of gold was flying through space. Arthur found the “hitchhikers guide to the universe” and came across an entry that said each civilization comes across three phases “how, why, where”. At that instant Zaphod came on the intercom and said “Earthman? You hungry, kid?” yes replied Arthur. “Ok” we will stop at a restaurant at the end of the universe.

To most people living in America, being an American is thought to be a great thing. The American dream sought out by the founding fathers and immigrants that were striving to get to this country was the doctrine of: “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. Americans get to make their own choices. They get to express themselves through freedom of speech without being afraid they will be put in prison or killed. Americans can be free in what they choose to wear and what they choose to do with their time and money. To people who aren’t American, life is about family, happiness, freedom, and white picket fences. To other people, American life is the life. The only thing is, that’s most people.

To me, being an American isn’t the greatest thing. I think that out of all the places to live, America is the best, but to me that’s not saying much. If America was really like all the adjectives that are associated with it, freedom, peace, diversity, acceptance, and equality, it would truly be a great place. Somewhere along the way to modernization, these founding ideas were lost and twisted to spit out the America we have today.

When people come to America from countries of oppression, tyranny, and subjugation, they are expecting to come into a country of freedom and self-expression. Instead they get only half the package. The American government doesn’t oppress the citizens; it’s the people who do it to each other. There is so much ignorance in the country it creates a huge amount of negativity towards people who don’t resemble the painted picture of an American. People who come here expect to be welcomed with open arms since this is the country of opportunity and freedom, but instead they are called names and harassed because they have an accent or wear a veil. That is when they find out that the free country isn’t really that free at all.

We as Americans are supposed to want peace and freedom throughout the world. It seems a bit strange how there is all this talk about peace and the actions taken out are the exact opposites. The violent actions of the past year are highly disturbing and quite sad because America shouldn’t be creating violence, it should be trying to stop it. It seems like the President has just added fuel to the fire. It doesn’t seem like there were completely impersonal motives behind the “liberation of the Iraqi people”. To be behind someone whose motives aren’t entirely for the interest of the people is not something I’m interested in.

Democracy is something that is available to all people no matter where they come from. Just because a person wasn’t born in America, doesn’t mean they are trying to be unpatriotic, or hateful towards this country, they are just trying to exercise their first amendment rights. And just because someone is born in American or is an American citizen, doesn’t mean that they are going to agree with and support everything that the President says. Everyone is entitled to what they want to believe in and to criticize someone for that would go against what our founding fathers worked so hard to create.

Being an American means something different to everyone. That is why people came here in the first place, to be free and be themselves without being thought of as low or wrong. The pursuit of happiness and all other freedoms are enjoyed by those who wish to obey the law of the land. These freedoms include the freedom of choice, speech, and those of the life. To not be given the freedoms based on a certain characteristic of a person isn’t very American at all. Living the American Dream is living your own dream and being an American is all about being yourself.

In my research for Learning Styles, and based upon results I received from a Temperament Test, I found that my temperament type was a Guardian. I learned that most people are classified as Guardians and that they comprise as much as forty to forty-five per cent of the population. Guardians are good managers who keep things running smoothly in their families, schools, churches and other social institutions.

It is no surprise that my temperament type is classified as such, since I have children that I manage every day. Being a good manager requires organization, and I like to keep everything organized. Organization assists me in managing my every day life. Tasks, such as maintaining my planner and scheduling my activities, help me to remember and to follow up on important duties.

The second area of testing concerned Emotional IQs. My results showed that I scored a total of one hundred eighteen, which is categorized as very good. The test findings revealed that I am able to express my feelings clearly in appropriate situations, effectively communicate and interact with others, and deal successfully with stress. I agree with these results since I typically try to express how I feel to others in my interactions with them. This strength will help me build strong relationships with family, friends and co-workers so that I will have the opportunity for a happier and more fulfilling life.

The last information I researched related to the three learning styles. The first style described was Visual Learners who learn most easily by seeing and are most responsive to diagrams, textbooks with pictures, overheads, videos and handouts. I see myself as this particular learning style since I understand concepts more clearly when I can visualize and obtain a mental picture of the information.

The second learning style described was Auditory Learners who learn best through verbal lectures, discussions, talking things through and listening to what others have to say. I would expect these learners to perform well in school because most classes consist of lectures and note taking.

The last learning style pertained to Tactile/Kinesthetic Learners who learn best with a hands on approach. It is likely that these learners will have to work harder to accomplish their goals.

Overall, the results of these tests have provided me with tools for succeeding in my classes and ultimately in the world. Previously, I was not aware of these learning styles. Knowing my particular learning style will enable me to focus on any weaknesses and work toward developing them into strengths.

The writing process can be viewed in a variety of different ways, depending upon what angle each and every reader chooses to take. Writing can be one of the most beautiful things that one has ever seen, or writing can hurt to look at. Some everyday things that can be used to describe writing are washing clothes, playing cards, and playing hide and seek.

Writing is a lot like washing clothes in many different ways. While writing, a certain amount of particular types of words or sentences must be used to create particular environments for the reader. If words are mixed together that don’t belong together, the writer could cause this technique to fade into the minds of unsuspecting readers as an acceptable technique for writing. Too much or too little of certain techniques may cause the writing to break down, just like a washing machine would break down after too many times with too much or too little laundry. If writing using just the right amounts of sensory details and sentence structure, the writing process will all come out clean and pure in the end.

Writing is a lot like playing cards. Like playing cards, many different styles of writing may be used to obtain an optimum result. Depending on the outcome the author wishes to achieve, he may free write, write poetry, or even write using an essay style. In the game of cards each player wants to win, just like in the game of writing the writer wants to win over readers. Writing requires much thought and concentration with each and every added part. Writing may be simply to entertain the reader, as a game of “go fish,” or writing may be to fight for a cause and win supporters, like a game of poker is for winning.

Writing is a lot like the game of hide and seek. Writers are sometimes “hidden” with their works and never discovered by a “seeker.” For example, Shakespeare wrote some of the most beautiful pieces of writing ever, but in his day and time he was not discovered by any “seekers.” Also, to succeed in writing one must not use the everyday clichйs but must be inventive if he wants to attract readers, just as a hider must find new and more creative places to hide every time in order to remain a hider. A writer must use every trick he knows in order to eventually reach the “base” and have a complete work.

As you can see, the writing process is very versatile. Different writers all have different ways of formulating their writing. Some writers spend amazing amounts of time making sure their writing is just like they want it to be. Others write for entertainment or just because they have nothing better to do. There are writers all over that are hidden from everyone and are waiting for someone to come along and check out their works. Writing will always be used to demonstrate everything we know and will never cease to exist.
