How to Write an Essay

June 8th, 2009 admin No comments

Writing an essay is all about developing your ideas about literary texts in an organized manner that demonstrates professional skills and exceptional grammar and formatting. You may wish to brainstorm before beginning to write – in order to determine your essay topic; however, if your instructor has provided you with the topic, you may begin with a topic statement and an outline.

Remember that when you collect information for your essay that you should always try to use sources that are direct, rather than secondary sources that only tell you what the original source said. This enables you to develop how the original writer wrote the information that you want to use; however, it is not always possible to do this because some works were written many years ago and may have been translated. If this is the case, be sure to research more than one critic or writer that has repeated the statements of the original writer you were seeking.

Additionally, keep in mind that your essay paper is a demonstration of your knowledge and your ability to communicate this knowledge on a professional level. It is rare that your future profession will require you to know all the things you may write essays in during school; however, this practice enables you to learn to express yourself clearly, uncover necessary research, and critically examine topics in a way that demonstrates clear and concise communication skills as well as thinking skills.

Finally, your essay paper must have an introduction, body, and conclusion. Be careful to stay within required word count or page count as requested by your instructor. Develop information using current peer-reviewed sources wherever available. When you write an essay, give yourself at least a day to set your work aside before editing it. Pick a subject or essay topic you enjoy whenever you can, and have fun essay writing!
